All I want for Christmas is my disc jumping heavy. HO for life!
That said, no matter what happens in development, I'll play the game for what it is and give it my honest opinion. I trust GG and all the devs to release something that's fun and addicting that'll fill that small void in my soul after T1.
In reply to Justice's earlier comment, I'm also a "mature" adult now that wonders what the old clan is up to, but T1 is still around and if people want to play it they can. Jeff and his crew are on the right track and I'm really excited to see what they release! Good job and keep up the hard work!
Edited to add to my previous post, no delete option that I can find.
Sorry for spamming, if anyone knows of a better place to talk about this, or where it's already being discussed (frankly the chaos of the tribal war forums, and general mean contrary attitudes of those who post the most tends to drive me away from the place) please share it here.
After reading what little there is about the game out there, I have a concern.
While I understand the freedom of movement concept, there's a couple of things I'd like the devs to consider. One, traveling along the ground, regardless of the actual speed involved, gives the illusion of speed. The closer to the ground, the greater the illusion. Two, energy management for your jump jets was the most significant aspect of Tribes that set the newbies apart from the veterans. The rocket pack, if I understand its function correctly, is a neat idea but it will lower the bar in terms of individual skill, flattening the learning curve, homogenizing the game. I could be completely wrong about how it will work, there's so little information out there, but the video clip I've seen and the interviews I've read suggests this is the direction the game is going. If that's the case, then from a game comparison standpoint, Legions will be more akin to space fighter combat than a FPS.
So I post in the hopes that this is not the case, or that if it is, some changes will be considered. Perhaps a compromise, rocket packs on heavier armors, but the armor, being heavy, won't be as nimble in motion, taking more effort to change direction, while 'light' armor, having less energy reserves and/or fuel capacity, is limited to jump-jets ala old-school tribes, but being lighter, they're very nimble, offsetting their fragility by not being there when something shoots at them. Realistically, a person in armor with the freedom to fly around as they please sounds more like a smaller, more maneuverable version of the t2 shrike, and while the shrike did have strategic value on the maps that allowed it, I didn't see that many matured players using it over just jumping from place to place.
Another thought occurs, which suggests there IS more going on that meets the eye, but just in case, I'll add it in here.
What's a cap route if you never have to touch the ground?
I'm assuming that capture the flag is still going to be the mainstay of legions? If that's the case, then unlimited flight does away with any need to be concerned about the terrain around the flag. Not to mention, it makes it a bit more difficult to defend the flag if it's in the open, since a capper can literally come from any direction. It also makes me wonder about the mechanics of chasing down a flag capper. And then there's disc jumping.
I'm not out to cause dissent by expressing these concerns. I WANT Legions to succeed. I want a game to come out that sets the bar high again (or even dare I say it higher). A bar high enough that other gaming houses start looking at creating 'Legion killers' (remember ahem Halo folks?).
Thomas is the lead designer on this game. I, or the developers have little control over what goes where with marketing, we just provide them with the information they need. I'm sure they did what they had to do simply from a traffic ranking standpoint. IGN is much higher ranked than GGE.
That said, while we are extremely busy working on the game, I'd be happy to put this page in control of someone reputable here who could give it more love with the updated version in development. :)
Im so excited, i just heard about "Fallen Empire: Legions." Tribes is one of my favorite games to this day, i can't wait for more jetpackin goodness. Long live garage games! I'm sooo friggin excited, i wanna be in the beta on instantaction!
Also, Wow. Justice, wow, i couldn't have said it better... ever. I'm with you, except on the house and marriage part. I'm still in college, but i was in my early teens when tribes 2 came out and i still look back on those days as some of my best. I completely understand what you mean and I'm with you, i want those days again.
It's funny how everyone whines and whines for a new Tribes game made by its developer and when they finally announce they are making a Tribes-like game everyone either starts whining about it, or totally blows it off, it is absolutely ridiculous how flaky people can be.
I for one cannot wait for this game to come out, I will not pass judgement on it until I play it. I trust Garage Games to deliver and once again cannot wait to play it!
Once again we see something Tribes rise from the trackless, reef-ridden depths. Will it be Vengeance part duex, or a true successor, in spirit if not in name, to what has come before?
Frankly I could care less what it's called or where we find out about it. Legions, Clans, Circle of Strife, GGE, Shacknews, does any of that really matter? What matters is who does it, and how well it's done. When it goes beta, public, or whatever, if it IS a successor, does anyone want to look back on THESE days wondering why they pick such nit?
You guys at GG, if you're paying attention to this little thread, if you're listening to them, then listen to me: My friends and I, who've gone on to 'grow up' and get real jobs, start families, buy houses and do all that sort of CRAP that counts as maturing these days, we look back on Tribes and Tribes 2 as the best part of our lives. We reminisce often, wondering where those people went, where our clan brothers moved on to, and if they're happy where they are now. But mostly we wish to return to those days, the days of watching a disc fly out of our gun, spinning across the map, and to watch it impact with unnatural accuracy on some minuscule figure perched on the flag stand so far away. We miss 'shazbot', we miss 'doh', we MISS it with a pain only a amputee could completely understand.
Once again the Tribes lure dangles before us. Should we take a bite? Should we grab on with tooth and nail as if our lives hang upon this thread of hope? And if we do, will it be yet another broken promise, leaving us bereft, with only Enemy Territory or Unreal Tournament as our succor?
For every person with something negative to say, let my words stand as testament that those who bitch the loudest only bitch because they are hungry, as hungry as we who don't bitch, for Tribes, whether it be called Legions or Bottlecaps, to be reborn while we're still young enough to play it as it ought to be played. Give us back our game, and we will PLAY.
Thomas, I am sorry if my displeasure with GG over this is unfortunately misplaced on this page, where hard working developers and others don't rightly deserve to take heat over p.r. issues, but sadly, no such place exists. I assure you that I even searched for other Legions entries before posting that comment.
In either case it points towards an unfortunate indifference towards this community. And sorry again for reducing my anticipation rating for the "more words go here" game.
I'd like to take this opportunity to point out that Fallen Empire: Legions is in no way related to the Legions GDC 06 tech demo (this page) other than the fact that we stole the name and that it's the long-awaited fruition of GG's ambition to create an FPS. I'd advise against voting this page down in reaction the the announcment of the new game (like Living Dead Boy did), but then again I wouldn't be surprised if we later stole this game page for the new Legions and decided to tell people it was the same thing all along for whatever reason. In other words, this page may or may not have anything to do with the new game depending on who you talk to and when you talk to them. So... there you have it. I guess.
Yes Arklon, I was also interested to read that today. And may I point out how UTTERLY LAME it was that the faithful here at Garage Games' own site did not get even the table scraps of a scoop on their upcoming big title.
yep, definitely want to be able to play this game. Garage Games please continue development. If i were rich i would fund it, man now all i need to do is inherit some cash :/
Well its most likely related in a way that its the engine its built on :P
Honestly though the video has nothing that would be directly related to the game. Just some nifty effects. No gameplay nor any new weapons or anything. The guy is the one you see in the newest screenshot though... Without the backpack... Not sure if that little thing in the back is a jetpack though ;o
No pressure, just the hopes and dreams of tens of thousands of Tribes fans for the rebirth of the game we all love and miss desperately. Please do it right, please do it well, and please support it after it is done. Oh, and don't dumb it down for the AOL community, let it be, once again, a game where the skilled need only apply.
Hey there, would love to hear some updated info regarding Legions - such as will it be a starter fps for tse, or a stand-alone game (or both!), and an ballpark eta would be great. Let us know where you're at!

I wonder what's going on...
Only 2 more years now. I can make it...
